NCAA officially declaring it an “emerging sport.” In order to now become an official NCAA sport, women’s triathlon needs 40 schools at the DI and DII level and 28 DIII schools to participate. If this does not happen over the next 10 years, the NCAA will drop the sport. However, so far things are looking very promising for the sport, with currently 20 division 1 and division 2 schools offering varsity triathlon teams.

There are 10 USA Triathlon Collegiate Triathlon Conferences that are affiliated with the USA Triathlon Collegiate Club program. The conference races are organized by the commissioners and are added waves at local events within the geographical region of the conference.

86% of USA Triathlon’s Olympians (since 2000) have come from NCAA single-sport swimming or running backgrounds.

Approximately 120 collegiate triathlon clubs are represented annually at Collegiate Club Nationals, and more than 1,200 collegiate athletes participated in last year’s event in Tempe.

The college (or collegiate) triathlon distance is the Olympic standard triathlon distance. The format is a continuous multisport race made up of three events held sequentially – a swim, followed by a bike ride, followed by a run. The official distances of each event in a college triathlon are:

Swim: 1500 meters (1 mile)
Bike: 40k (24.8 Miles) Draft legal
Run: 10k (6.2 miles)

Fall Semester:
Triathlon is a Fall sport, held in the first half of the U.S. school year.
Events are usually held between August and October.
You can expect approximately 5-7 events in an average season.

Spring Semester:
The Spring semester is the off-season for triathlon.
You can expect to practice a maximum of 8 hours a week during spring.
In addition to individual training, strength and conditioning sessions will be scheduled in preparation for the upcoming season.
