Collegiate gymnastics is extremely competitive and attract some of the best in the world. For Men there are 15 NCAA institutions with gymnastics programs. For women’s there 82 teams. Women’s gymnastics teams on average consist of 17 student athletes. Scholarship limit per team is 12 so the opportunity for strong female gymnast is to receive substantial scholarship is very good. NCAA D1 women gymnastics is a “head count sport“ so many full scholarships are awarded, while in the other divisions and in Men’s it is “equivalency sport” which means scholarships are divided among all teammates.
The world’s best gymnasts have come through the American college system. Numerous Olympic medal winners have competed in the NCAA championship, making college gymnastics one of the more prestigious collegiate sports.
