Tennis
INTRO
Tennis is one of the most represented sports in collegiate sports. Over 1200 schools support tennis. Also, more international players participate in collegiate tennis than any other sport. The level of collegiate tennis has been steadily increasing. For many years college tennis has been a stepping stone to professional tennis but now more so than ever. Many top professionals like Steve Johnson, John Isner, Bryan brothers have competed in college.
With many schools involved, there is also a significant gap between the top schools and smaller programs. Competition in the top 75 of NCAA I is very strong and most teams have players with some professional experience and professional ranking. Top 20 NCAA II and top 10 NAIA programs are equally competitive and could match up well against many second tier NCAA I programs.
Competition varies in strength between different conferences and there is competitive difference between teams in the same division particularly for women. Women’s tennis is a Title IX (gender equality) sport enjoying higher number of scholarships available (8 per team in NCAA I and II) and it’s a head count sport which means that if the player is awarded a scholarship it is a full scholarship.
