INTRODUCTION
US Higher Education is the most diverse system in the world. There are public and private institutions, small, medium and very large, religiously affiliated and secular. They are spread across the land in urban or rural settings. There are schools that emphasize vocational, business, engineering or technical curriculum while many other allowing very broad selection of studies. Some schools belong to the most demanding and highly regarded institutions in the world with difficult admissions and low acceptance rate, and others that are very open and accessible to most students meeting basic standards.
Most of the schools have very international student body. The openness to international students lies at the core of US education. Students enrolling in the USA are up for a unique multicultural experience.
US Secondary education is unique on the world scene, also due to its investments and emphasis on sports. Large portion of school’s income is dedicated to supporting over 30 collegiate sports. Many schools and teams have a world class support and display a highly competitive level. In some sports, collegiate athletic experience is a pre-requisite for participation in professional sports.
American system is largely de-centralized meaning it is not regulated by the government and the quality of education is supported by competitive market forces rather than central requirements and standards. This environment stimulated diversity that is unseen in other parts of the world.
Close to 500,000 international students are enrolled in undergraduate programs and almost 400,000 in graduate programs in the USA. The reputation and diversity of education in addition to strong hopes of being employed and residing in US after graduation continue attracting vast number of students from around the world.
